When a friend is in the midst of a life-changing event such as the end of a relationship, the loss of a friend or family member, there might not be anything you can do to take away the pain. The best you can do is to listen to her, and cry with her. Sometimes the knowledge that someone has been where you are, felt that pain and has become a stronger person is enough to keep you going when all you want to do is stay in bed and hide from the world.

The beginning of 2005 was not the happiest time in the life of Maya; it was a confusing and depressing time. A relationship I was in at the time was coming to an end and I did not want to admit it at the time. Eventually you have to deal with things as they are, not as you want them to be. When the relationship ended after almost 2 years together, I felt a mixture of relief and sadness with a dash of anger thrown in for good measure. Another friend of mine was going through a similar experience, we will call her BJ.

BJ and I came to rely on each other in the next few months. We would see each other at least 1x a week, talk on the phone almost everyday, and just talk each other through what we were feeling at the time. We went together to various events in the city so that we wouldn’t have to go alone. Our friendship grew stronger due to these tough times.

The funny thing is that when you take the time to help someone you are really helping yourself. I have read studies that if you are feeling down, the best remedy is to spend time with others; you can read about one of these studies here. You may be wondering how BJ fared after her relationship ended. BJ tried one of the Jewish dating sites and after meeting a few toads, she did find her prince. She got married in January of this year.
